GETTING STARTED

That right there is a Flash game, and this website here is designed to help you make something like that! It's a lot easier than you might think; the hardest part is just getting set up.

INTRODUCTION
Making games is awesome, but learning something new can be intimidating if you don't have some help or guidance. Fortunately this guide can help with some of those headaches! It is divided into three easy steps.

STEP 1: GET THE TOOLS
Building a game, like building an Ikea desk, requires a few simple tools. Fortunately, they're free and pretty easy to use. Programmers call these tools IDEs, or Integrated Development Environments. If it helps, you can think of them like Microsoft Word for programmers. You type your code, hit save, and then run your game!

STEP 2: MAKE A GAME
For anyone new to creating games, using an established game library can help speed things up by taking care of a lot of the basics of game code. Both of the libraries we recommend are free and cover the fundamentals of 2D games, including sprites, tilemaps, collisions, and scrolling.
FLIXEL:
  • Record & Play Replays
  • Powerful Debugger
  • Camera System
  • Auto Tile Placement
  • Style: C++/Java

FLASHPUNK:
  • Z-Sorted Display
  • Motion Tweening
  • Pixel & Grid Collisions
  • Fixed/Variable Timesteps
  • Style: Game Maker
  • Find Out More >>>
Some other awesome libraries include TweenLite for "tweening" objects and variables, and Box2D for awesome 2D physics like wheels, ropes and springs. These libraries can be used on their own or in concert with other game libraries.

You can of course simply code your game from scratch as well! The Flash Game Dojo knowledge base is a great place to get started for help with these libraries or with anything else.

STEP 3: SHARE YOUR GAME
The best thing about making a Flash game is that almost everyone with a computer can play it. Upload your finished game here so you can share it with the rest of the world!
FLASH GAME DOJO UPLOADER
Uploads temporarily disabled due to abuse :(
Use the file browser to pick the appropriate SWF file (e.g. myFirstGame.swf) and then press UPLOAD. Games with a lot of music are usually bigger and will upload more slowly. Once the upload is complete, Flash Game Dojo will generate a short URL for you.
